Steps to how to apply Shea butter on your hair?

OK i just bought this African Shea butter thing and its my first time using it i heard it was good. Its in this container thingy and its yellow...... I'm i suppose to melt it and put it on my hair only if my is i wet do i put or can i put it on when my hair is dry?????
