What does an unstyled middy haircut look like?

I need some help. I'm thinking about getting the middy haircut, well probably more like the femme fatale, I have to go shorter in little steps. :) Anyway, I am in the army, and have to pull my hair back EVERY day, so my hair pretty well trained to lay flat against my head. Not so great when you want to do something fun with it. Also, I'm looking for pictures of this hairstyle, if you don't style it. Can it be a wash and wear look? Obviously it's not going to have the fun curls and glamour we associate with it, but is it going to look ridiculous if I don't curl it?
